Advent reflections on angels & the arrival of a host in church at Avenue St.Andrew's URC Southampton

As part of our preparation for Christmas, we run a series of short reflections, taking place when the church is open mid week for its Café service. Therefore, these are informal, in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, attracting both regular church members and café users. This year we decided to base the reflections on the Alternativity materials 'Setting the message free'.
Anyone who comes on to the church premises was asked to make or colour an angel, so that each week the church had more angels appearing, inspired by the discussion at the reflections or by the sense of community which blossomed and grew through the work of the Ministry team to encourage people to join in.
We have been thrilled and delighted seeing the Holy Spirit at work in our community of church members, premises users and those who come in to the building for any reason. A heavenly host of angels was certainly seen around the church by Christmas, of different shapes and sizes, styles and colours as well as standing or flying! Many people have commented on the joy and increased sense of anticipation within our extended community this Advent and Christmas season because of this focus.
People are now being asked to take home the angels they made/brought & have them as a focus for prayer and/ or thought over the coming months. If someone did not bring in an angel, they have the opportunity to 'Adopt and Angel' from those remaining. The Good News of this special season will be remembered within our church and its community for a long time; the message has been freely shared.
