Christmas. Celebration or Survival

Christmas. Celebration or Survival?

This new pack was written by women for women, women of all ages, in different circumstances, but with one thing in common; they somehow feel let down by Christmas. The sessions in this pack begin early enough in the year for decisions to be made together about any change they might want to make but allowing space to reflect after Christmas on the stories and, if appropriate, to support each other through the grey days of the early New Year.

More Than Just Tinsel

More Than Just Tinsel

The build up to Christmas is a manic time of the year. It is so busy that we hardly have time to be still, quiet and reflect. These sessions offer some of that reflective space - where people can articulate something of the spiritual in their lives; where they may be challenged on issues of justice in the world; a space where they can seek out and search for answers to those ultimate questions of life.

Extending the Table

Extending the Table

A follow-up to the original Advent Meal, this includes a meal to celebrate Advent and another to help to continue celebrating through to Epiphany. The central theme of this Advent meal is 'bread' - bread for the journey, shared bread, Jesus as the bread of life, and how much we take for granted when we say, 'give us our daily bread'. The second meal inthis book helps to counter the idea that Christmas day is the end rather than the beginning. Full instructions are given and will suit groups of many different sizes and settings.

The Epiphany Box

It is easy to see Advent as a countdown to Christmas and stop there. This resource has been designed in response to this and is intended to help us to carry on reflecting after Christmas day, using it as a beginning rather than an end.

The themes running through this resource are the reactions of people to the birth of Jesus and the forgotten people in the gospels.  What can we learn from their stories and the forgotten people in our society today?

These lovely boxes are made by women who are part of a co-operative, Hot Chilli Concepts, in an inner city slum community of Bangkok.  The Cooperative aims to provide a fair wage and give job security to the women involved.  Each box helps to restore dignity and freedom to the women who made them.

The pages of the booklet included in the box you will find reflections for each of the 12 days of Christmas leading up to Epiphany.  Each day has a symbol to aid reflection and also as a reminder.  There are 12 hand-made tiles in the box which share these symbols.

Star Box – A Special Gift

In this beautiful hand made star box is a thought for each day of Advent written on a star shape.

Taking a moment to reflect on the meaning of Christmas and the Good News for the world today helps to change the emphasis of Christmas preparations; last year some commented on the sense of journey towards the 25th December, others that it became a special moment in the day.

This beautiful box is made by women in the slums of Bangkok as part of a small cooperative known as Hot Chilli! Many of the poorest women in Thailand are forced into prostitution or illegal activity such as drugs or stealing as a way to feed their families. Hot Chilli offers an alternative and the project not only gives an income but also pride and dignity to the women. As a recent visitor commented: "They weren't looking for a handout, just a better chance in life."

Christmas Tree

The Christmas Tree

This book has ideas about how the Christmas tree might add to worship and in fact might even become central to it in the season of Advent (and beyond). To allow the tree to tell the Christmas story does not detract from its beauty but we hope adds a new dimension.
