Alternativity is an organisation which began in the churches and whose main aim was to recapture some of the values of the first Christmas. A quick glance at last year’s BBC blog shows that there is a yearning for something different and a growing dis-ease with what’s on offer. Many comment on the greed, on the pressures to conform, on the lack of sincerity, the drunkenness, the squabbling over food but the only solution they offer is to opt out.
The story at the heart of this celebration offers some markers for a Christmas with integrity.
We offer alternatives which we hope are fun, offer hope and echo some of these values. We have found that when people get together and decide to do it differently, they have the courage to stand against the expectations, they find ways of doing it more simply and more meaningfully. Little rituals take on great significance.

Here at home, women carry the burden of Christmas and for many in our poorest areas, Christmas is a time of survival rather than celebration - there are money worries, there are family strains and there is a pressure to ‘get it right’. Debt levels because of Christmas spending are growing year on year. Seven million people financed Christmas 2010 with a credit card and the even sadder tale is an average debt of £303 per person was still hanging over from Christmas 2009! We think at a global level that there will be no peace until there is no poverty so part our aim is find ways to include the poorest in our celebrations. Whether you are part of a group or not, you can bring some friends together and get talking. There’s lots of ideas for starting conversations so help us make this Christmas on that’s simple, just and peaceful. We can guarantee it will be the best Christmas ever!
